Bozzwell has always been an original, a one-off – a larger than life character just as willing to bare his soul as lay down a mind-warping dancefloor groove. Cocooned in a tiny studio on the top floor of a former steelworks in Sheffield, ‘Boz’ creates music that defies easy categorization. Straight-forward European techno this is not.

After a period of hibernation, Bozzwell is ready to stick two fingers up at techno conventions with the release of his brand new album on Firm/Kompakt, ‘Bits & Pieces’.

Like his previous releases on such illustrious labels as Firm, Crosstown Rebels and Eskimo, ‘Bits & Pieces’ fuses the throbbing techno pulse of Berlin with the soft-centred futurepop of Cologne and the industrial heritage of hometown Sheffield.

It’s this unique fusion that’s showcased here, on a ‘Bits & Pieces’ sampler 12” that boasts two album originals and a pair of inspired remixes from Andre Kraml and regular Bozzwell/Hiem collaborator Justus Kohnke.

Kraml kicks off proceedings with his interpretation of ‘I Can’t Be’, a deliciously deep and atmospheric rework that conjures images of late night drives across the American mid-west. Steel guitar never sounded so good.

Next up, Boz himself weaves his own distinctive vocals around tingling piano riffs and distinctly Balearic flourishes of ‘I Get A Rush’. It’s a next-level pop gem that will send shivers down the spine of even the most po-faced techno miserablist.

Flip to the B, and Justus Kohnke is on hand to give ‘I Can’t Be’ his personal stamp of approval. Utilising Boz’s heartfelt vocals, the Cologne futurepop hero builds a shimmering electrofunk groove worthy of Europe’s finest dancefloors. Mellow and groovesome in equal measures, it’s just what we’ve come to expect from the Kompakt regular.

Finally, Boz serves up one of the album’s highlights: the gently throbbing ‘In My Cucoon’. Arguably the most straightforward dancefloor track on the album, Boz’s highly personal lyrics seemingly float above the sort of gently pulsating techno workout that will soon be bothering bassbins the world over. The bass says ‘Sheffield bleep’, the beats say Berlin and the melodies Cologne. That’s Bozzwell all over. If you’ve got the time, check out the video – it really is rather special.

Just like ‘Bits & Pieces’ in fact.
